Reversing the imperial gaze, affirming possibility: Conrad and Fanon in Amma Darko's beyond the horizon

Drawing on Bakhtin’s notion of the dialogism word, especially double-voiced discourse, this paper examines Darko’s subtle inscription Conrad's Heart Darkness and Fanon’s The Wretched Earth in her novel Beyond Horizon (1995). Specifically, "horror" novel’s title as discourse or dialogical sites contestation affirmation, respectively. It argues that while Conradian subtext can be understood context reversal Marlow’s imperial gaze Darkness, Fanonian revolves around politics “beyond horizon” which is contingent decentering Europe location hope for postcolonial people. By focusing dialogue with Conrad Fanon, shows Darko strategically frames Mara’s encounter a journey into “heart darkness” also foregrounds delinking from West an emancipatory ethic thought transformation.
